The purpose of XMI is to enable easy interchange of metadata between UML-based
modeling tools and MOF-based metadata repositories in distributed heterogeneous environments. XMI integrates three industry standards:
XML - eXtensible Markup Language, a W3C standard. See XML
(new window).
UML - Unified Modeling Language, an OMG modeling standard. See UML
(new window).
MOF - Meta Object Facility, an OMG meta-modeling and metadata repository standard.
See MOF (new
window).
The integration of these three standards into XMI allows developers of distributed systems to
share object models and other metadata.
