XML Metadata Interchange (XMI)

The purpose of XMI is to enable easy interchange of metadata between UML-based modeling tools and MOF-based metadata repositories in distributed heterogeneous environments. XMI integrates three industry standards:

  1. XML - eXtensible Markup Language, a W3C standard. See XML (new window).
  2. UML - Unified Modeling Language, an OMG modeling standard. See UML (new window).
  3. MOF - Meta Object Facility, an OMG meta-modeling and metadata repository standard. See MOF (new window).

The integration of these three standards into XMI allows developers of distributed systems to share object models and other metadata.

Also see the Common Warehouse Meta-Model (CWM).

Organization: Object Management Group
