Using Type Codes to Construct Classes
Type codes provide a good place to start creating a class hierarchy as you consider converting the data definition from a relational to an object schema. A class hierarchy in an object schema takes the place of type codes in a relational schema. In the object model, type codes are known and "understood" as the class hierarchy. In a relational schema, type codes are embedded in the data and are not actually "understood" by the relational DBMS. This section will illustrate how type codes can be used to construct a class hierarchy.
